A Look Under the Waves at 1st  U.S. Offshore Wind Farm

NY Offshore Wind Alliance Director Joe Martens will Participate in
National Webinar to Unveil Underwater Footage at
Block Island Wind Farm, As will a Local Fishing Captain

New York Offshore Wind Alliance Director Joe Martens will be a representative for the growing offshore wind sector at a webinar where brand new underwater footage of fish and marine life captured at the first U.S. offshore wind farm – and reactions from Block Island fishermen – will be revealed.

The webinar is sponsored by the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA).

The New York Offshore Wind Alliance has applauded Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s plan to create enough offshore wind energy to power 1.25 million homes, create a $6 billion industry, and procure 800 MW of offshore wind during the next two years, and 2,400 MW by 2030.

Martens has called Gov. Cuomo’s master plan “an unprecedented, nation-leading effort that lays the foundation right here in New York for a new American industry.”

Block Island, RI – Never-before-seen underwater footage of fish and marine life captured at the first U.S. offshore wind farm and reactions from Block Island fishermen will be revealed next week.
When: 11:00 am ET, Wednesday, February 14, 2018
What: A webinar screening of the first underwater footage of wildlife at the Block Island Wind Farm, reactions from people who fish near the turbines, and remarks on offshore wind and fishing by leading industry experts.

It’s been a little over a year since the Block Island Wind Farm, America’s first offshore wind farm, started providing electricity to thousands of Rhode Islanders. Locals have learned what it’s like to fish around the turbines and the Block Island experience provides a window into the future as the U.S. offshore wind industry scales up. The American Wind Energy Association and the University of Delaware’s Special Initiative on Offshore Wind joined forces to tell that story by producing the first underwater footage of the turbines.

There will be an opportunity for Q&A with a local fisherman and wind industry representatives.

Who:
  • Aileen Kenney, Vice President of Permitting and Environmental Affairs, Deepwater Wind
  • Nancy Sopko, Director, Offshore Wind and Federal Legislative Affairs, AWEA
  • Joe Martens, Director, New York Offshore Wind Alliance
  • Chris Hobe, Captain and Owner, Fish the World Charters

RSVP: Members of the media must register for the webinar to attend.
